Situated near the European landing of the Bosphorus Bridge, this stately mosque is perhaps the prime example of Baroque architectural style in Istanbul.
Constructed in 1853 during the rule of Ottoman Abdulmecid, the mosque was built by Nikogos Balyan. An earthquake in 1894 severely damaged one of the minarets, and it has since undergone many renovations to prevent collapse. The dome ceiling is covered with colored mosaic tiles and the massive windows let an immense amount of light pour into the structure.
