Eyup Sultan Mosque

Address: Kalenderhane Caddesi Eyüp
Web Site: www.eyup.bel.tr
Working Hours: Every day, except during prayer times 5 times a day

Constructed in the 8th century by Mehmet the Conqueror, this mosque is said to be named after a close follower of the Prophet Muhammad. The original Eyup Mosque was actually destroyed in the 18th century during an earthquake - what visitors see today is a product of the Baroque era.
The interior hosts a variety of tile art from a range of time periods and design styles; a collection difficult to find in one setting. Try not to visit on Fridays - the mosque will be filled with worshippers.
If you walk up the hill through the graveyard, you’ll find Pierre Loti Cafe offering an arresting view of the Golden Horn.
